  • The first Infection Control Certification Board was appointed.
  • APIC Certification Association (APICCA) was established.

1982

1983

  • CBIC offered first formal examinations
  • APIC membership: 5,000+

1986

  • “National Infection Control Week” established by President Reagan (now called International Infection Prevention Week or IIPW)
  • Infection control was upgraded by the Health Care Financing Administration (now Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services) from a standard under sanitary environment to a separate Condition of Participation.
  • APIC membership: 7,000+
