Chapter volunteers and leaders are bringing forward new and innovative programs, resources, and networking groups to help their members achieve higher levels of competence and relevance. The Chapter Excellence Award recognizes local chapters that have aligned their members and resources in support of APIC’s mission and strategic plan.
A chapter can apply in one of the following categories:
- Clinical and Professional Practice
- Education, Communication, and Information Resources
- Member Support
- Synergistic Alliances
Chapter size levels:
- up to 50 members
- 51-100 members
- 101+ members
Up to three awards (one per size level) may be given for each of the four categories (12 total awards).
Past recipients of this award have conducted innovative programs, services, or campaigns to engage their chapter members and provide best practices to other chapters. Submissions should go beyond traditional member services and present creative solutions to chapter challenges.

Synergistic Alliances
The Chapter Excellence Awards are presented during the Chapter Officers’ Meeting at the APIC Annual Conference. Each award recipient will receive a certificate, $500 in APIC products and services, and an opportunity to share their submission with other chapter leaders.
The Chapter must be in good standing with APIC HQ, including up-to-date Chapter Treasurer’s reports, current bylaws, and maintaining the minimum number of Chapter members.
Nominees for this award must meet all criteria per award category.
- Clinical and Professional Practice – Chapter that best demonstrates innovation in defining, evaluating, and continually improving the practice of infection prevention and healthcare epidemiology.
- Criterion 1: Promotes membership development in the new IP Competency domains of Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) Informatics, IPC Operations, Leadership, Professional Stewardship, Quality Improvement, and Research.
- Criterion 2: Participates in infection prevention, control, and epidemiology activities that support APIC’s Strategic Plan and new Competency Model.
- Criterion 3: Provides leadership and professional development programs for board and chapter members.
- Education, Communication, and Information Resources– Chapter that best demonstrates innovation in developing, promoting, and providing meaningful, accessible, and affordable education in the form of products, services, or resources for infection prevention and control professionals, healthcare workers, and the general public.
- Criterion 1: Provides timely communication to promote and support the mission, vision, and strategic goals of APIC. (Application must include samples of social media, newsletters, or website communication).
- Criterion 2: Sustains chapter website with current information and resources for members, healthcare workers, and/or general public.
- Criterion 3: Promotes educational programs, products, and other resources for healthcare professionals and the general public.
- Member Support– Chapter that best demonstrates their innovative support for the retention, recognition, leadership, and professional development of its members.
- Criterion 1: Demonstrates innovative methods to recruit new members and chapter leaders, retain members, recognize members’ accomplishments, and support professional and leadership development.
- Criterion 2: Utilizes social media for timely and effective communication among members.
- Criterion 3: Assesses member needs and develops and implements strategies to improve chapter services.
- Criterion 4: Promotes and recognizes APIC-endorsed certification and recertification. (Application should include quantitative data of certified members.)
- Synergistic Alliances– Chapter that best demonstrates innovation in identifying, evaluating, and pursuing opportunities for synergistic alliances.
- Criterion 1: Establishes alliances with other organizations (domestic or international) with complimentary missions and goals. Examples include public health departments and other APIC chapters.
- Criterion 2: Develops and influences public policy independently or in conjunction with allied organizations.
- Criterion 3: Builds relationships with other key stakeholders who have similar goals in infection prevention but are not traditional IP partners. Examples include restaurants, patient advocates, daycare centers, and schools.)
The APIC Chapter Excellence Award submission consists of the following:
- Online application
- Written summary of activities and supporting documents to satisfy each criterion of award category.
- The written summary should be no more than two typed pages and should clearly and succinctly describe how the chapter met each criterion in the award category.
- Supporting documentation that demonstrates fulfillment of each criterion.
- The supporting documentation should be no more than eight pages. Applications longer than eight pages will only have the first eight pages counted toward the scoring. All additional pages will not be viewed or scored.
- Supporting documents should cover no more than a 3-year period (e.g., 2017-2019 for 2020 award application).
- A five to 10 minute PowerPoint presentation describing/showcasing the awards submission.
- PowerPoint presentation should have no more than 10 slides.
- Selected presentations will be posted in APIC’s chapter leader portal. Representatives may be asked to present at chapter leader meetings.
- Confirmation that the chapter is in good standing with APIC HQ, including up-to-date chapter treasurer’s reports, current bylaws, and maintaining the minimum number of chapter members.
Note: Chapters can submit for up to two categories per year. Separate application and supporting materials are required for each submission.
